About Martin

Martin Campbell is a Sydney based artist who works in oil. After studying traditional oil painting for many years he now paints in a more contemporary style. His main focus is the industrial landscape of the working harbour. Much of his work is sourced from the area surrounding his studio (One + 2 Studios) in Balmain or on trips to the Hobart waterfront.

In 2012, Martin won the ANL Mission to Seafarers Art Prize. In previous years, he has been selected as a finalist in the Mosman Art Prize and the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Sydney Heritage Fleet shipyard.

Martin is a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW and an Exhibiting Member with the Australian Society of Marine Artists. He also enjoys the occasional landscape painting trip as a member of the Australian Plein-Air Artists Group.

Inspiration

"What excites me about industrial subjects is the intriguing texture and vibrant colour which you might not notice at first glance. My aim is to reveal the hidden beauty of these contrasts. I like to work with oil paint to create layers of textured colour and isolate objects from their surroundings for a strong composition."
